BRUSSELS – Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov unveiled sets of the new Bulgarian euro coins to the Presidents of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the European Council Antonio Costa, and the leaders of EU member states.
Zhelyazkov highlighted Bulgaria’s readiness to be a proactive and responsible participant in the EU monetary union during his discussion with Ursula von der Leyen.
He emphasized that the adoption of the euro is the culmination of ongoing efforts and reforms, which will foster economic stability, enhance confidence, and create new opportunities for Bulgarian citizens and businesses.
The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the unwavering support from European institutions throughout Bulgaria’s journey to join the euro area, and introduced the European leaders to the national symbols depicted on the coins’ reverse side, which showcase Bulgaria’s history, cultural identity, and its place within the European community.
Zhelyazkov assured that the Bulgarian government has implemented all necessary measures for a smooth, transparent, and successful transition to the euro.
Addressing the President of the European Council, Zhelyazkov declared that Bulgaria’s entry into the euro area on January 1, 2026, will further strengthen the European Union.
Bulgaria is set to officially adopt the euro, becoming the 21st member of the euro area on January 1, 2026, nearly 19 years after its accession to the European Union. The Council of the EU reached a unanimous decision on July 8 this year regarding Bulgaria’s euro adoption. Earlier that same day, the European Parliament had also approved—by a significant majority—the report regarding the introduction of the single European currency in Bulgaria. (18.12.2025)
