A major power outage struck southeastern France on Saturday, disrupting the Cannes Film Festival and leaving around 160,000 households without electricity.
The outage occurred around 10 a.m. after a fire broke out at a high-voltage transformer and nearby power lines were damaged, according to France’s electricity operator RTE. The company confirmed it is actively working to restore service to affected areas.
Authorities believe the fire and damage were likely intentional. Local police have launched a criminal investigation into the incident. The disruption briefly impacted festivities at the internationally renowned film festival underway in Cannes.
