“Poland’s western border is disappearing,” stated Mariusz Błaszczak, a senior PiS politician, criticizing Tusk’s “servility toward Berlin.” Sławomir Mentzen from Confederation accused the Polish Border Guard of collaborating with Germany in accepting illegal migrants.
The government condemned these accusations. “Don’t politicize Poland’s security. This isn’t the time for such actions,” said Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland’s interior minister, on X.
Poland’s retaliatory controls have put Merz’s border policy under scrutiny, with Germany’s left-wing opposition seeing Warsaw’s decision as a setback.
“This signals problems for a German government and a ‘foreign chancellor’ Merz, who pledged to rebuild European trust,” Chantal Kopf, a Greens lawmaker, told POLITICO.
Knut Abraham, a Merz conservative member and the government’s German-Polish relationship coordinator, warned against prolonged checks in an interview with Welt. He stated they are “necessary as a signal of changed migration policy in Germany… but the solution isn’t to shuttle migrants between Poland and Germany or to establish lasting border controls.”
Merz defended Germany’s border checks on Tuesday.
“We intend to maintain the Schengen area, but freedom of movement will last only if it’s not exploited by those encouraging irregular migration, especially migrant smuggling,” he said.
