Bratislava – New regulations will govern the issuance of temporary European Union (EU) travel documents, following an amendment to the Travel Documents Act that Slovak President Peter Pellegrini signed on Friday, as announced by the presidential office, according to TASR.
The updated legislation characterizes the EU temporary travel document as a document with specific territorial and time limitations, designed for the purpose of returning to the home country or another country of residence. The standard validity period of this document will be up to 15 days. The interior ministry noted that in exceptional circumstances, a temporary travel document could be issued with a longer validity.
The amendment also establishes a fee structure for obtaining an EU temporary travel document, set at 50 euros. Additionally, the fee for applying for this document will be raised to the same amount, while the cost for requesting a repeat issuance within six months will be 100 euros. Other consular fees are set to increase as well, ensuring they are divisible by five to eliminate the need for coins.
According to the 2019 Directive that introduced the EU temporary travel document, this document is issued by a member state at the request of an EU citizen who is unrepresented, such as in cases of theft, loss, or destruction of their passport, or if the passport cannot be obtained promptly. The directive outlines the rules and procedures for obtaining this document and establishes a standardized format. The temporary travel document ensures that the holder receives the same level of diplomatic and consular protection in the host country as nationals of the issuing member state.
