Paris – Santiago Peña, the President of Paraguay and a member of Mercosur, emphasized on Monday during his visit to France that the recently concluded free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur will primarily benefit Europe. He made these comments ahead of a scheduled meeting with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.
Peña acknowledged that while the agreement has faced criticism from several European nations, especially France, he believes it will “mainly bring benefits to Europe, and also to Latin America,” as he stated in an interview with AFP.
“We need to strive for better understanding and address our fears,” Peña remarked, highlighting that “change is often challenging, as those who perceive a loss of privilege tend to react first, while most who will gain from the changes are often unaware of the benefits.”
He stressed the importance of ensuring “effective communication across all sectors” to alleviate concerns among skeptics and to inform potential beneficiaries of the substantial advantages the agreement can offer. (December 9, 2024)
