Ongoing Unrest in Brussels Leads to Arrests of Several Minors

Brussels (Eurotoday) – Brussels has been experiencing some level of unrest as several minors were arrested due to disturbances across the city. These cases occurred mainly in the Schaerbeek region, where unrest broke out during a small protest that police had to disperse. Hoodlising, fireworks, and fire-related events such as burning cars, scooters, and bins took the situation to another level. The concerned authorities continue the operations with the aim of containing the violence while also ensuring that the conflict does not escalate. 

The protest started when a number of people staged a protest in Schaerbeek, which was planned through social media platforms. The cause of the assembling is still unknown, but it soon transgressed into violence. The police were called, and a representative stated that 13 underage individuals were detained. The situation appeared to improve as the night went on, and the police made it a point that each detained minor was returned home by the evening. Furthermore, the Brussels Fire Brigade had to intervene in response to the series of fires across the city. Needless to say, on Wednesday, this brigade received 24 emergency calls, some of which were fires in cars. The next day, cases of fire in rubbish bins and scooters were few compared to the previous day, but still several. In all these cases, police and especially fire departments cooperated, where police helped firemen in fighting the calamity.

Violent demonstrations and arrests

Strikes in Brussels are rather a continuation of the process of escalation in the city over the past several months. Prior unrest on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day was blamed on dissatisfaction with some political or social problems, and the recent protests also seem like part of the wave of civil unrest. Although authorities have been prompt in preventing the spread of public violence, the event has revealed that the local force in policing and responding to similar disturbances remains in a state of soup.

This new twist is that children are also part of the Social Unrest.  The police have urged the public to take any measures that will safeguard them, but the apprehensions of young individuals concerning such actions are questionable. In such a context, it is possible to explain why a small-scale protest could provoke such a reaction from the police. There is evidence that the level of tension in the city has been increasing.

In the past few years, many protests have taken place in Brussels, including social protests, the dissatisfaction of youth, etc. With this increasing tension, local authorities are doing their best to avoid worse incidents and keep the lid on social polity. Community sources have reiterated the need for dialogue between various factions to address the issue that has led to the unrest, seeking to establish long-lasting solutions in the city. This situation brings Brussels into focus as a city, which has emerged as a worry in relation to civil liberties and security.
