Turkey’s Ousted Opposition Leader Prepares for Potential New Party Amid Political Crisis

Istanbul, July 15 Eurotoday Newspaper – Turkey opposition crisis intensified after ousted Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel confirmed that preparations are underway for a possible new political party if legal efforts to regain leadership do not succeed. His comments come as Turkey’s main opposition continues to face internal divisions following a court ruling that overturned the results of the CHP’s 2023 leadership congress.

CHP Leadership Dispute Deepens

Özel said establishing a new political movement remains a contingency plan rather than the preferred outcome. He emphasized that his priority is to resolve the leadership dispute through ongoing legal appeals and an extraordinary party congress.

The political dispute has created uncertainty within Turkey’s largest opposition party, with many lawmakers and local officials continuing to back Özel despite the court’s decision. Supporters argue that a fresh congress would provide the most democratic solution to the leadership crisis.

Possible New Party Could Reshape Turkish Politics

If legal challenges fail, a new party led by Özel could significantly reshape the country’s opposition ahead of future national elections. Political analysts say the move could either split opposition voters or create a stronger alternative platform if reconciliation within the CHP proves impossible.

The Turkish government has rejected accusations of political interference in the judiciary, while opposition leaders continue to argue that recent legal actions have increased pressure on their movement.

What Comes Next

Attention now shifts to the appeals process and whether party members will be allowed to hold another leadership congress. Until then, Turkey’s opposition remains in a period of political uncertainty that could influence the country’s electoral landscape for years to come.
