Nine EU Countries Urge European Court to Relax Rules on Expelling Foreign Criminals

Nine European Leaders Seek to Loosen Rules on Expelling Criminal Migrants

Nine European heads of government are calling for a revision in the interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights to make it easier to deport migrants who have committed crimes.

In a joint statement led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the leaders argue that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has broadened the Convention’s scope excessively. The full letter can be read here.

Meloni emphasized the need to rethink decades-old international agreements in light of modern challenges. “Italy and Denmark want to initiate a political discussion about certain European conventions that we are committed to—and whether, decades after they were written, those conventions are equipped to deal with critical issues of our time, especially the migration issue,” she said Thursday evening.
