Insect Named After Netflix Series
A new species of small horned bee, dubbed ‘Lucifer,’ has been identified in a remote area of Australia. Discovered in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, approximately 300 miles east of Perth, this bee was reported by the Telegraph.
The distinctive horns are only present in females, potentially serving for protection or aiding in nectar and pollen collection, according to the discovery made by Dr. Kit Prendergast from Curtin University.
The name ‘Lucifer’ was chosen by Dr. Prendergast due to her fondness for the Netflix series. Its scientific designation is Megachili (Hackeriapis) Lucifer. In Christian theology, Lucifer symbolizes a fallen angel often linked with Satan.
Researchers stumbled upon the bee while examining a rare wildflower on the Bremer Mountains in the Goldfields.
“These horns are unique and devilish, which inspired me to name it Lucifer,” Dr. Prendergast told PerthNow. “Lucifer means ‘light bearer’ in Latin—I aim to illuminate issues concerning the conservation of native bees and the numerous species yet to be described.”
The discovery, published in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, includes a call to protect the region where the bee and its wildflowers reside, safeguarding it from potential mining or agriculture. This protection would ensure the survival of the entire dependent ecosystem.
“We lack knowledge about Australia’s native bees—their identities, distributions, and nesting habits remain largely undescribed. The importance of documenting this species is evident, especially since it visits a critically endangered plant. Many mining areas in resource-rich Australia pose severe threats to wildlife. A lack of native bee surveys by mining companies might result in overlooking crucial species that support endangered plants and ecosystems.”
