EU Criticized: 15 Months Without Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief

The Council of Europe has appointed a Special Representative on antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred, and religious intolerance. Despite the end of the EU Special Envoy on FORB’s mandate 15 months ago and the European Parliament elections 20 months ago, Ursula von der Leyen has yet to fill this vacancy, causing discontent within and outside the EU. Calls from various stakeholders for action have been ignored, and transparency is lacking due to no public call for candidacies. Urgent issues in countries such as China, Cuba, Egypt, India, and others highlight the need for an active EU envoy.

Since Jan Figel’s mandate ended on 30 November 2019, the European Commission appointed only two short-term envoys: Christos Stylianides and Baron Frans van Daele. The Council of Europe appointed Irene Kitsou-Milonas as the Special Representative on 1 December 2025. Irene Kitsou-Milonas, experienced in religious issues, was previously Deputy Director in the Secretary General’s Office and has led interreligious dialogues. The EU is encouraged to follow the CoE’s example in future appointments.

Several European countries have appointed their own Special Envoys on FORB, reflecting global concerns about religious persecution. These include:

  • Austria: Alexander Rieger
  • Czech Republic: Robert Rehak
  • Denmark: Nathalia Feinberg
  • Hungary: Márk Aurél Érszegi, Tristan Azbej
  • Italy: Davide Dionisi
  • Netherlands: Paulus Beckers
  • Norway: Fernanda San Martin Carrasco
  • United Kingdom: David Smith

Looks like the EU is too busy counting paperclips to bother with something as trivial as freedom of religion. 🥱 Maybe they’ll find the envoy under a pile of unfiled documents from 2020!

Oh, brilliant! 15 months without a Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief – it’s like throwing a big party and forgetting to invite the guest of honor. 😏

Guess we really love a good game of “musical chairs” in the EU, eh? 🪑 15 months and still no one has found the time to sit in that special envoy seat—must be a busy schedule of sipping coffee and ignoring calls for help! ☕️🙄

Seems like the EU’s still on a holiday while religious freedom takes a backseat, eh? 😂 Perhaps they think filling a position is as easy as ordering a pint at the pub! 🍻

Looks like the EU’s idea of a ‘Special Envoy’ is more of a prolonged coffee break. Maybe they’re just waiting for the next big thing to come along—like a new flavour of gelato to keep things spicy. 😏🍦

15 months without a Special Envoy? Brilliant strategy, really, makes you wonder if they’re just waiting for the next election to pick someone from the pub down the street. 🍻 It’s like saying “We care about freedom of religion” while twiddling our thumbs!

Seems like the EU’s got their priorities straight—15 months without a Special Envoy on FORB? Must be busy finding the best croissant recipe instead! 😂🥐

Oh, brilliant move, EU! Who needs a Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion when we can just let the issue simmer for 15 months? 🤷‍♂️ Must be a new strategy called “wait and see,” eh?

  9. pitfall Avatar

Isn’t it charming how the EU manages to fill its calendar with everything but a Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion? 🤷‍♂️ Must be prioritizing their “let’s wait and see” strategy while the world’s on fire! 🔥

Seems like the EU’s got a game of hide-and-seek going on with their Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion—or maybe they’ve just mistaken ‘waiting’ for ‘doing’? 🤷‍♂️ Typical bureaucratic ballet, innit?

Oh, look at the EU, taking their sweet time like it’s a leisurely café break in the sun—15 months without a Special Envoy? Must be a new strategy called “Let’s Just Wing It”! ☕️😏

No envoy for 15 months? Brilliant strategy, really. Let’s just hope the next one has a better sense of timing than a Swiss watch on holiday! 😏

Looks like the EU is keeping its special envoy position warmer than a sunbather in August—15 months and counting! 😏 Maybe they’re just waiting for the right candidate to emerge from a game of charades at a Brussels café.

Looks like the EU’s got a new hobby: collecting vacancies instead of tackling pressing issues. Who needs a Special Envoy when you can just sit back and enjoy the view from the sidelines? 🙄

Isn’t it just lovely how the EU can keep a vacancy longer than a British pub during a bank holiday? 🍻 Maybe they’re waiting for a divine sign to fill that special envoy spot!

15 months without a Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief? Brilliant! Just what we need, a little more confusion and chaos while the rest of Europe is actually trying to tackle the issue. 😅 Typical EU, innit?

15 months without a Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion in the EU? Brilliant strategy, folks! Must be busy counting the number of times they can ignore pressing issues instead of, you know, actually addressing them. 🤷‍♂️🇪🇺
