Brussels – EU member states and the European Parliament have reached an agreement on new regulations aimed at tackling deforestation in rainforests. The decision finalized on Tuesday night includes a one-year delay in implementation, but the legislation itself remains unchanged.
The deforestation directive faced significant challenges, as conservative factions within the European Parliament sought last-minute modifications to the existing requirements, despite prior consensus on the rules last year.
The negotiations concluded with a compromise, facilitated by the EU’s new environment commissioner, Jessika Roswall, during discussions on Tuesday evening.
