Belgium Joins European Nations in Updating U.S. Travel Warnings Over LGBTQ+ Concerns
Following the Dutch government’s advisory, Belgium has announced that it is also revising its travel guidance due to increased border scrutiny and shifts in societal attitudes toward transgender and LGBTQ+ individuals, Flemish public broadcaster VRT reported.
Germany and Finland have similarly adjusted their travel warnings for the United States. This move comes in response to recent policy changes under President Donald Trump, including the removal of certain protections for sexual minorities. One such measure mandates that U.S. passports and visas only recognize male or female gender markers.
“It reflects a sad and entirely unnecessary reality,” said Dutch MEP Kim van Sparrentak of the Greens group in an interview with POLITICO.
Van Sparrentak, who leads the European Parliament’s LGBTIQ+ intergroup, emphasized that these concerns extend beyond travelers. “It’s not just about Europeans visiting the U.S. but also about a significant portion of the American population—especially trans and intersex individuals—who are directly affected.”
