WARSAW (ANP) – “We definitely want to collaborate, but the focus should be on our collective goals. Currently, I feel that progress at the European level isn’t aligning with my expectations, which is why I believe it’s necessary to pursue a national strategy as well,” stated Faber following a meeting on Thursday.
Faber expressed her willingness to engage with the European Union when it allows her to achieve specific objectives “more effectively and efficiently,” affirming, “I will not hesitate to pursue those opportunities.”
The discussion paper presented by the Polish presidency during Wednesday’s meeting highlighted the significance of EU member states acting collectively. It cautioned that bilateral agreements with external countries could lead to those nations imposing stricter conditions on the return of asylum seekers, ultimately undermining the position of both the member states and the European Union as a whole, according to the Polish President.
The Netherlands, for example, has established agreements with Morocco regarding the return of asylum seekers who are not permitted to remain in the country. Faber is also in negotiations with Algeria on similar matters.
However, Faber does not share Poland’s apprehensions. “While it’s true that acting as a collective makes one stronger, the insights we gain can still be leveraged among European member states. I view that as a positive thing. Collaboration can enhance our respective strengths,” she remarked.
