The Bulgarian regions along the Black Sea, situated on the eastern edge of the European Union, should be given equal consideration as other EU regions bordering Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. This was emphasized by the Bulgarian parliament in a declaration adopted today regarding the mid-term review of cohesion policy proposed by the European Commission.
The Bulgarian parliament urges the European Parliament and the Council of the EU to include equitable treatment for the Black Sea area in the upcoming legislative and program documents of the Union, alongside other eastern border regions of the EU.
The National Assembly calls for the Council of Ministers to maintain this stance during the mid-term review of cohesion policy and in upcoming negotiations for the next multiannual financial framework covering the period from 2028 to 2034.
According to the declaration, the Black Sea region, which includes parts of Bulgaria, faces escalating security risks, as well as economic and environmental challenges due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which significantly impacts Bulgaria’s eastern regions.
The chairman of the parliamentary committee on European affairs, Dimităr Gărdjev, clarified in the plenary session that the declaration addresses the proposed changes to the cohesion policy’s regulatory framework and the suggested emergency support for regions along the EU’s eastern border, which face security challenges and geopolitical concerns.
