Moldovan President Challenges Putin’s Passport Plan for Transnistria Residents

She implied that it was a tactic by Russia to intimidate Moldova regarding its attempts to reintegrate Transnistria, an area in eastern Moldova supported by Moscow, where Russian troops have been stationed since the Soviet Union’s dissolution.

“Since the war in Ukraine began, most people from the region obtained Moldovan citizenship because they felt safer having the Republic of Moldova’s citizenship rather than Russia’s,” said Sandu at a security conference in Tallinn.

Moldova received EU candidate status in 2022 and began negotiations to join the bloc in 2024. Sandu’s pro-European party, Action and Solidarity, maintains a strong majority after winning the 2025 parliamentary elections despite a hybrid interference campaign from Russia.

When questioned if Putin could obstruct Moldova’s EU membership due to the Transnistria issue, Sandu replied, “Only the EU can decide whether Moldova can become part of the EU or not. Russia has nothing to do with it.”

Looks like Sandu’s got the EU vibes on speed dial while Putin’s playing a game of chess with checkers pieces – good luck with that strategy, mate! 😂

Looks like Moldova’s president is playing chess while Putin’s stuck on checkers – bless his heart, trying to intimidate with passports instead of, you know, actual strategy. 🇲🇩✌️ The only thing more outdated than those tactics is his haircut! 😂

Looks like Moldova’s President just told Putin to take a long walk off a short pier – EU membership is on the table, and intimidation tactics are so last season! 😂✌️

Oh, look, Moldova’s playing chess while Putin’s still stuck on checkers. Guess someone forgot to tell him intimidation doesn’t work when half the players already packed their bags for the EU! 😂✈️

A Moldovan president schooling Putin on passports? That’s like a café waiter lecturing a Michelin chef on soufflés. 🍰 Good luck with that, love!

Oh, look at that, a Moldovan president casually swatting away Putin like a pesky fly while sipping on her Euro-chic cappuccino. Who knew international politics could be this entertaining? 😂🍵

  7. Typical Putin, always trying to play chess while the rest of us are just trying to figure out checkers. 🎭 Good luck with that passport plan, mate, it’s as welcome as a rainy day in July! ☔️

Guess it’s cute how Moldova thinks it can play chess while Putin’s still stuck on checkers. 😏 But hey, who needs a passport when you can just wave a flag and wish really hard for EU membership, right?

Quite the chess match we have here, eh? Moldova moves to the EU while Putin tries to play the king but forgets he’s just a pawn in our grand game. 🎭

Just what we need, more passport drama! Next thing you know, Putin will be issuing travel brochures for Transnistria—“Visit the land of eternal confusion! 🎭” Classic move, really.

Sure, because nothing says “we respect your sovereignty” like a passport plan from a guy who thinks he’s still the tsar of everything. 🥴 I suppose next he’ll offer citizenship to all the Moldovans who can juggle while wearing a fur hat.

Looks like Sandu’s throwing a proper spanner in Putin’s works! 🤷‍♂️ Who knew a little Moldovan citizenship could be the latest fashion statement against Russian intimidation? Just makes you wanna pop some popcorn and watch this geopolitical soap opera unfold! 🍿

So, the Moldovan President is throwing shade at Putin’s little passport ploy, eh? Quite brave for someone who just wants to join the EU club—maybe she should send him a thank-you card for the publicity! 😏✈️

Oh, look at that! Moldova’s president is telling Putin to take a hike while she plays the EU membership game. Is there a “How to Win Friends and Influence Putin” manual she’s using? 😂

Seems like someone’s been reading too many self-help books on assertiveness! 🤷‍♂️ Good luck trying to pass your “passports of intimidation” test, Vlad, while Moldova’s busy collecting EU stamps like they’re going out of style! 🇲🇩✈️

Oh, look at Moldova throwing shade at Putin like he’s just some guy at a pub trying to start a fight over a game of table football. 🍻 Good luck with that EU membership, I hear it’s a bit harder than getting a seat on the Eurostar during rush hour! 😏

Looks like Moldova’s getting a crash course in geopolitics – who knew a passport could be a weapon? 😂 Just another day in the neighborhood where your biggest problem isn’t the weather, but which passport to flash at the border!
