Mercosur: French Minister States No Signature Before Safeguard Clause Adoption

Paris – Minister Benjamin Haddad stated in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche (JDD), “We want this clause to be adopted and recognized by the Mercosur countries prior to any agreement signing,” highlighting that France is currently “assessing” whether the guarantees will “sufficiently protect agricultural sectors from market disruptions.”

In early September, the European Commission introduced “safeguard measures,” aiming to secure France’s approval.

“Another crucial issue for which we seek a swift resolution is the necessity for a series of mirror clauses to ensure that the same standards apply to both European and imported products,” he emphasized, reiterating that the government’s sole priority is to protect farmers “against unfair competition.”

Brussels aims to achieve approval from European States by the end of December. The agreement, adopted on September 3, 2025, by the European Commission, requires ratification from all 27 member countries before it can be implemented. (November 2, 2025)

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a good old ‘safeguard clause’ to keep the French farmers in the vineyards while the rest of us wait for the rest of Mercosur to stop twiddling their thumbs. 🍷🇫🇷

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed – a game of ‘who can drag their feet the longest’ while farmers watch their livelihoods hang in the balance. 🙄✌️

  3. Isn’t it charming how the French minister is playing a game of hide and seek with signatures? 😂 Guess we’ll just keep assessing while the farmers keep waiting for their knight in shining armor. Typical! 🍷

You know, nothing screams “let’s get this deal done” quite like a bunch of bureaucrats insisting on more red tape before signing anything. Classic French move—protecting the farmers while the rest of us just want our croissants without the drama. 🍷🥖

  5. Looks like France is playing hard to get with Mercosur—who knew a ‘safeguard clause’ could be the new ‘let’s just be friends’ in international negotiations? 😂 Just waiting for the farmers to start charging for emotional support at this rate!

Looks like the French are playing a classic game of “let’s wait for the perfect moment” while the rest of us are just trying to get things done. 😂 Who needs progress when you can have endless negotiations, right?

Oh sure, because nothing screams “efficient diplomacy” like dragging your feet over a safeguard clause while everyone else is ready to sign. Typical French flair for keeping the suspense alive! 😏✌️

Oh, brilliant! Let’s make sure we have a safeguard clause before shaking hands; nothing screams “let’s do business” like endless red tape and farmers shouting for joy! 😂✌️ #Progress

  9. Oh, brilliant! A race to sign before breakfast, but only if we can first dance around the safeguard clause like it’s the waltz at a Parisian ball. 🕺💼 What’s next, a three-course meal deal with the Mercosur folks? 🍽️

Oh, fantastic! Because what’s a trade deal without a good ol’ game of “let’s make sure our farmers don’t get steamrolled”? 😂 Just another day in the bureaucratic funhouse!

Oh, brilliant! Because what’s a trade deal without a bit of bureaucratic tango first? 🍷 Let’s just hope our farmers don’t start charging us for the privilege of eating their crops while we wait for these ‘guarantees’! 😏

  12. Oh, brilliant! Because what the world really needs is more red tape before we can even think about signing anything. 😏 Just love the idea of dragging this out while farmers bite their nails!

Oh sure, let’s just hold our breath until everyone agrees on the safeguard clause—because who doesn’t love a bit of bureaucratic tango before signing a deal? 😏🕺

Oh, marvellous, just what we need—more clauses to keep our farmers safe from the invisible horrors of imported produce. I suppose a bit of paperwork is all it takes to protect our beloved baguettes! 😂🥖

Oh, brilliant, just what we needed—another round of “let’s think about it” before we let the ink dry! 🥳 France will ensure our farmers are as protected as a cat in a Parisian café—absolutely safe and enjoying the view while the rest of us sort out the mess.

  16. Of course, because what’s more important than ensuring our farmers are cuddled in a cozy blanket of regulations while the rest of the world plays poker? 😂 Let’s just hope those ‘safeguard measures’ don’t become as mythical as unicorns! 🦄
