Mechelen (Eurotoday): Mechelen is launching a campaign to support new smoking bans in public areas, including parks and schools, starting December 31, 2024. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke aims for a smoke-free generation by 2040, promoting awareness of smoking dangers to protect youth
The city of Mechelen is launching a new campaign to support new laws banning smoking in public places. Starting next month, posters will be placed in areas where children and young people often hang out, like parks, playgrounds, and near schools. These posters will clearly state that smoking is not allowed, helping to create a healthier environment for kids. The city hopes that by putting up these signs in busy areas, more people will be aware of the new rules and follow them.
How will Mechelen’s smoking ban impact public health?
This initiative supports the federal government’s decision to expand the smoking ban, which will begin on December 31, 2024. The new laws aim to reduce tobacco use and protect public health, especially by limiting young people’s exposure to harmful smoke. It has been said that Mechelen’s efforts not only help enforce these rules but also promote a healthier community, setting a positive example for other towns to follow.
“Seeing smoking can encourage people to smoke, and we want to promote a smoke-free generation,” says De Francesco. While there won’t be strict checks on this new law, the city aims to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and encourage people to think about their choices.

Oh sure, because nothing says “let’s make our parks safer” like slapping up a few posters 😅. I mean, if only we could just ban secondhand smoke with a stern look and a “no smokes allowed” sign, right?
