ECB Allows Europeans to Select the Euro’s New Design

The central bank has proposed ten designs for future banknotes, inviting public feedback on culture, nature, access, and trust in cash

The European Central Bank has initiated a public vote on the future design of euro banknotes, urging Europeans to engage with ten proposed designs before a final decision by the end of 2026. This redesign, the first comprehensive refresh since euro cash was introduced in 2002, is being positioned not only as a security update but as a matter of identity, inclusion, and the public role of money.

The ECB released the shortlisted designs on 23 July, allowing Europeans to participate in an online survey until 21 September 2026. The options focus on two themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds,” both aimed at moving beyond the current series’ anonymous architectural imagery.

For a currency used daily by millions, this choice is more than aesthetic. Banknotes are rare EU symbols handled across class, age, and geography. They circulate in market stalls, care homes, train stations, small businesses, and family budgets, making their design a subtle form of public language that shapes Europe’s self-representation.

A redesign with civic importance

The ECB states the new series should enhance security, sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, and relatability. These goals place the redesign within a broader debate on public trust. Recently, European institutions have had to defend the practical importance of cash and the legitimacy of shared symbols amid political fragmentation, cost-of-living pressures, and digital changes.

The current euro notes, introduced in 2002, avoid real monuments or named figures, featuring bridges, windows, and gateways to signify openness and connection without favoring any national history. The new shortlist proposes a more direct visual approach, with culture, rivers, birds, and shared landscapes expressing unity without erasing differences.

This process occurs during challenging economic times. As Europe’s inflation debate shows, money is not merely technical. It relates to household security, public confidence, and whether institutions can justify their choices in ways people understand.

Selection process of the shortlist

According to the ECB, over 1,200 submissions were received from graphic designers across the EU. Twenty-five designers were invited to create proposals, and an independent 21-member jury, with experts from euro area national central banks, selected ten designs for the shortlist.

Per the ECB’s future banknotes process, the Governing Council will consider public feedback, a representative survey of euro area citizens, technical assessments, and jury conclusions before choosing the final design. The selected design will require further development and production, meaning the notes won’t circulate immediately.

The central bank emphasizes continuity. Existing euro banknotes will maintain their value and circulate alongside the new series, reassuring older people, low-income households, migrants, small traders, and others who may rely more on cash or feel excluded by rapid digital payment shifts.

Cash, access, and the right to choose

The redesign comes as Europe debates public money’s future in a more digital economy. Card payments, mobile wallets, and instant transfers are common, yet cash remains a safeguard for privacy, resilience, and inclusion. For those without stable banking access, escaping coercive control, or vulnerable to power or network failures, physical money still serves a protective role.

Thus, the visual redesign should not be seen as merely

Selecting a new design for euro banknotes? Brilliant! Because nothing says “we’re in a financial crisis” quite like arguing over pictures of rivers and birds. 🦢💸

Bloody marvellous, innit? Nothing screams ‘trust’ quite like letting the masses pick the next paper they shove in their wallets—just what we needed during an economic crisis! 💸😏
