Will Europe Embrace Britain’s New Prime Minister?

Andy Burnham becomes the seventh British prime minister to enter Number 10 Downing Street since the Brexit vote a decade ago. Can he rejuvenate the UK’s relations with Europe and revive a stalled reset with Brussels?

Host Anne McElvoy engages with two experts familiar with the complex UK-EU relationship. Sylvie Boulard, France’s defense minister in 2017 and a former MEP, advised Emmanuel Macron on Brexit repercussions.

Sir Simon Fraser, who led the UK’s Foreign Office from 2010 to 2015, has extensive Brussels experience. He served as Peter Mandelson’s chief of staff when Mandelson was the EU trade commissioner and held a senior role at the British Embassy in Paris. Currently, he is at the helm of Flint Global, collaborating with James Purnell, Andy Burnham’s new chief of staff.

Looks like we’re giving Number 10 another go—how many prime ministers does it take to change a lightbulb? 🤔 Hope Burnham’s got more than just a nice suit under his belt; otherwise, it’s just another round of tea and crumpets with Brussels! 🍵✨

Just what we need, another PM to charm our socks off while the EU’s still figuring out how to get their own socks on. 🧦🙄 Good luck, mate—might as well have a pint and watch the show! 🍻

Oh, brilliant! Another PM to sprinkle fairy dust on the UK-EU relationship – because clearly, that’s been working so well, hasn’t it? 😏 Let’s see if Burnham can charm the socks off Brussels or if it’s just another round of “who’s got the best excuses.” 🍵

So, another PM in the hot seat, eh? Bet the only thing getting rejuvenated is the coffee machine at Number 10 – Brussels must be thrilled 🤷‍♂️☕️.
