Madrid criticized Rome for introducing border controls that disrupted thousands of passengers during the summer holiday season, accusing it of creating legal uncertainty. Spain also condemned Italy for criticizing its migrant policy while neglecting its own border security.
Despite Italy being the EU country with the highest number of irregular crossings in recent years—sometimes double Spain’s figures—Spain noted it has never enacted controls on travelers from Italy.
Madrid has given Italy a two-day deadline to remove the controls, threatening reciprocal actions to safeguard Spanish citizens’ interests and dignity.
Governments should foster understanding and serve their populations’ general interests, rather than creating divisions and unnecessary conflicts for domestic political reasons, the statement emphasized.
“We trust that Europeanism, common sense, and good faith will prevail.”
