UK Labour Membership Declined Sharply Under Keir Starmer

After a landslide victory in 2024, Starmer faced challenges in 2025 that tested his leadership of the center-left party, which regained power after 14 years.

He encountered internal pressure leading to several policy reversals and dismissed Peter Mandelson as the U.K. ambassador to the U.S. following new revelations about his ties with convicted sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

Starmer’s predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn, saw membership surge, with the Labour party exceeding half a million members during his peak.

Under Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the party shifted rightward on economic policies, immigration, and benefits, leading to the expulsion of left-leaning figures like Corbyn and Diane Abbott.

This shift created tension between the leadership and a membership base more left-wing than the general British populace. The removal of the whip from Labour MPs opposing government welfare policies in 2024 and again in 2025 was significant.

In 2023, Starmer addressed members, saying: “If you don’t like the changes that we’ve made, I say the door is open, and you can leave.”
