Paris – In a speech delivered to the French public on Tuesday evening, President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for Europeans to abandon their naivety regarding trade and agricultural policies. He urged for an “awakening” in response to external regulations that “others” impose.
Macron stated, “We must reject trade regulations imposed by others, which we are the only ones adhering to. We must refuse any dependence on others that lacks reciprocity and fails to secure our future.” This address was part of his remarks concerning 2025.
The recent conclusion of a free trade agreement between the EU and four Mercosur nations—Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay—has sparked renewed protests within the French and European agricultural sectors.
“What we need is a European awakening—one that is scientific, intellectual, technological, industrial, agricultural, energy-focused, and ecological,” he continued. “To achieve this, we must accelerate our decision-making processes, act more decisively as Europeans, simplify our regulations, and increase our investments.” (December 31, 2024)
