The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, recently stated that the use of U.S.-supplied weapons to attack targets within Russia marks “a qualitatively new situation in terms of the involvement of the United States in this conflict.”
Meanwhile, the Russian military itself has been using foreign-made weapons, including Iranian-made Shahed drones, during its attacks on Ukraine.
Earlier this year, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for allowing Ukraine to strike military targets inside Russia. He argued that Moscow had been exploiting Western restrictions on the use of donated missiles, giving Russia an unfair advantage.
Fresh reports have surfaced suggesting that the Biden administration, in its final days, has permitted Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles against Russian targets. On the other hand, President-elect Donald Trump has signaled a different approach, indicating that he would seek a peace deal with Russia and may halt U.S. aid to Ukraine.
The U.K. is expected to follow the U.S. lead by supplying Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles. However, Germany has reaffirmed its stance of not providing Ukraine with long-range missiles, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterating his opposition to such a move.
