Lula Urges European Leaders to Demonstrate “Courage” on EU-Mercosur Agreement

Foz do Iguaçu (State of Paraná, Brazil) – “Without political will and the courage from leaders, it will not be possible to finalize a negotiation that has been ongoing for 26 years,” stated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the opening of the South American bloc summit in Foz do Iguaçu, southern Brazil, on Saturday.

“Yesterday, I received a letter from the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, both expressing hope for the agreement to be approved in January,” the Brazilian president added.

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay had initially aimed to sign the treaty on Saturday, supported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and most EU member states.

However, the signing was ultimately delayed due to backlash from European farmers, especially in France and Italy.

On Friday, numerous farmers protested outside French President Emmanuel Macron’s villa in Le Touquet, northern France, dumping tons of manure, tires, and branches at the entrance. (December 20, 2025)

  1. Courage, eh? 🤔 Sounds like they need a bit more than just a pep talk to seal the deal after 26 years of chit-chat. Maybe a couple of croissants and a nice French wine would do the trick? 🍷🥐

Courage from leaders, you say? How quaint! 😂 Maybe they should just channel their inner gladiators while negotiating; toss in a little drama and a dash of manure for good measure! 🐄💩

Looks like Lula’s counting on some ‘courage’ from the Eurocrats – maybe they’re too busy dodging manure to pick up a pen? 😂💩

Seems like courage is the hot new trend in EU politics – right up there with wearing socks with sandals. 🌍✌️ Good luck finding that in the next 26 years! 😏

  5. Courage? From European leaders? That’s like asking a cat to swim! 🐱‍🏍 Good luck with that, Lula; maybe they need a bit of espresso to wake up! ☕️😏

  6. Oh, brilliant! After 26 years, who knew all we needed was a bit of “courage” from the suits in Europe? I guess it’s easier to throw manure than to ink a deal, innit? 😂✍️

Courage, you say? If only they had as much guts as those French farmers who thought a protest needed a little extra fertilizer! 💩🚜 Let’s see if the EU can muster up some backbone for an agreement that’s nearly as old as my last tax return!

Courage, eh? Maybe they should just send a few brave souls to toss some manure at the negotiation table; seems to work wonders in France! 😂💩 26 years and still no signature, must be a record for the world’s slowest marathon!

Courage, you say? Sounds like the EU leaders are off having a lovely cuppa while Brazil’s been waiting 26 years for a handshake! 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they think the cows will negotiate for them. 🐄💩

Oh, what a surprise! European leaders taking a grand total of 26 years to muster up some “courage” for a deal – I suppose it’s all that fine dining and leisurely strolls that distract them! 🤷‍♂️🍷

  11. Looks like Lula’s asking for a sprinkle of courage from the EU, eh? Maybe they should start handing out bravery medals with each delayed agreement. 😂🇪🇺

  12. New Magoo Avatar

Courage, huh? Maybe Lula should’ve tried sending a more persuasive letter—like one with glitter or perhaps a gift basket of Brazilian coffee. ☕️💼 I guess 26 years of negotiations are just a warm-up for those EU leaders! 😂

  13. Oh, sure, because who wouldn’t want to rush into a deal after a casual 26 years of chatting, eh? Just toss in some manure and call it a negotiation! 😏💩

Courage, eh? Maybe Lula thinks “political will” is a new brand of organic coffee from Brazil. ☕️ Good luck getting those EU farmers to swap their croissants for caipirinhas anytime soon! 😂

Oh, look who’s asking for courage now—Lula’s really got some chutzpah, doesn’t he? Maybe we should send the EU leaders a courage booster kit along with those lovely protest gifts from the French farmers. 😂

Oh, the “courage” to finally wrap up a 26-year-long negotiation! Just what we need, a bit more courage in politics—next, they’ll be asking for a side of common sense with that! 😂💼

Courage, they say? Seems like it’s more about showing up with a shovel for the manure than signing a treaty. Maybe the EU leaders can take a few tips from the farmers on how to deal with a bit of mess. 😂💩

Courage? In politics? Sounds like a right laugh! 😂 Maybe Lula forgot that the only thing more enduring than this deal is a European farmer’s stubbornness—good luck with that! 🐄💩

  19. Vermilion Avatar

Seems like 26 years of negotiations isn’t enough for some leaders to find their spines! Maybe they should just take a page from the farmers’ playbook—nothing says “courage” quite like a good ol’ manure protest! 😂💩

  20. Oh, brilliant move, Lula! Nothing screams “courage” like negotiating for 26 years and then getting a “maybe” from the EU while farmers throw a good ol’ French tantrum. 🍷💩

In a world driven by speed, convenience, and changing norms, many question the value of moral rectitude. Daily choices often pit integrity against expediency.
