Foz do Iguaçu (State of Paraná, Brazil) – “Without political will and the courage from leaders, it will not be possible to finalize a negotiation that has been ongoing for 26 years,” stated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the opening of the South American bloc summit in Foz do Iguaçu, southern Brazil, on Saturday.
“Yesterday, I received a letter from the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, both expressing hope for the agreement to be approved in January,” the Brazilian president added.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay had initially aimed to sign the treaty on Saturday, supported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and most EU member states.
However, the signing was ultimately delayed due to backlash from European farmers, especially in France and Italy.
On Friday, numerous farmers protested outside French President Emmanuel Macron’s villa in Le Touquet, northern France, dumping tons of manure, tires, and branches at the entrance. (December 20, 2025)
