Lithuania Forms New Ruling Coalition

Lithuania’s Social Democrats formed a coalition government on Monday with the populist Dawn of Nemunas and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, along with their controversial partners, succeeding the Democrats “For Lithuania” party.

The Farmers and Greens join the new government with their contentious allies, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance led by Waldemar Tomaszewski, a longtime critic of the government’s position on Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and the ban on Russian TV channels. Included are two unaffiliated MPs: Ignas Vėgėlė, a vocal critic of Covid vaccinations, and Rimas Jonas Jankūnas.

According to the coalition agreement, the Social Democrats, the largest party in the country’s Seimas parliament, will retain nine ministries: finance, defense, culture, social security, transport, health, education and sport, foreign affairs, and interior. Dawn of Nemunas will oversee three: environment, agriculture, and energy. The Farmers and Greens, along with their allies, will assume control of economy and justice.
