Le Pen on Saturday sought to align herself with the legacy of General de Gaulle, criticizing Europe’s apparent inability to assert itself amid geopolitical tensions between Washington and Moscow.
Reflecting on Trump’s recent Oval Office exchange with Zelenskyy—an encounter she attempted to downplay—Le Pen questioned Europe’s role in the conflict. “What does yesterday’s conversation really show?” she asked. “It proves that the Americans decide whether to continue or end the war. For European nations, this is a significant humiliation.”
She went on to call the situation a “major diplomatic failure,” arguing that Europe’s diminishing influence is becoming painfully clear.
However, unlike Macron, Le Pen does not believe that deeper European integration is the solution.
She pledged to resist any efforts to create a unified European defense policy, a stance that could seriously challenge the EU’s ambitions if she wins the French presidency.
“As always, the European Union is using a crisis to expand its powers,” Le Pen warned. “I see that some want this conflict to drag on so they can seize control of defense matters. I do not accept this.”
