Landsbergis: ‘A Poor Agreement in Ukraine Will Increase Vulnerability in Eastern Europe’

BRUSSELS – Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis warns that a “bad agreement” in Ukraine, especially one that acknowledges Russian occupation of significant territories de facto rather than de jure, could diminish American influence in Eastern Europe and create uncertainty about NATO’s commitment to defend the eastern flank, particularly in more vulnerable regions like the Baltics. He cautions Western Europe, which he believes has a “different sensitivity” to the threats from Moscow, against seeking a “gray area” for agreements with Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with ANSA, Landsbergis expressed concern that if an agreement in Alaska favored Russia regarding occupied territories, Europe might accept it in lieu of US support for Ukraine, as it would not constitute official recognition. He noted similar sentiments from NATO Secretary Mark Rutte, fearing a narrative is forming to justify such acceptance, which would settle for “the bare minimum” to avert a larger crisis.

This approach of acquiescence has serious implications. The trust of Eastern European nations in the US as a primary security guarantor would be undermined. Landsbergis pointed out that Russia’s de facto control has been growing since 2014 and is encroaching upon NATO territories. He questioned what would happen if Russia expanded further into areas currently protected by NATO, raising doubts in countries like Lithuania and its neighbors that would be hard to dispel.

Landsbergis also highlighted the danger of setting a precedent. He warned that if Putin believes he can leverage direct communication with a US leader like Trump, he might attempt to take the Baltics and expect negotiations on this “new reality.” He referenced Rutte’s comments about the Baltics being a territory occupied by the Soviet Union de facto, questioning whether such a situation would be accepted today under similar circumstances.

Ultimately, he noted the stark differences between Western and Eastern Europe’s experiences, emphasizing that the future of their children is at stake and underscoring that Eastern European nations are close to meeting spending targets established at the last NATO summit, unlike Spain, which can afford to take a different approach.

Seems like we’re all just waiting for the next episode of “How to Lose Your Eastern Europe in 10 Easy Steps.” If only the rest of the continent could borrow some common sense from the Baltics—oh wait, that’s asking too much! 😂

Seems like Landsbergis is auditioning for the role of Captain Obvious in the geopolitical soap opera. Who knew that “bad agreements” could lead to “bad outcomes”? 🤷‍♂️ Classic move, really—just what we need, a masterclass in how to roll over and play dead in the face of a bear! 🐻💤

Aye, just what we need – a ‘poor agreement’ that makes us all feel cozy while the bear’s feasting at the door. Brilliant strategy, lads! 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Landsbergis is auditioning for the role of the gloomy prophet of Eastern Europe. 🙄 If only we could negotiate our way out of reality with a smile and a nice cuppa!

  5. Well, if we think a ‘poor agreement’ is the answer to Eastern Europe’s problems, maybe we should just hand out participation trophies instead. 🏅 Heaven forbid we expect a bit more from diplomacy than just a lukewarm handshake with Uncle Vlad!

Typical Landsbergis, always warning us about the big bad wolf in the east—it’s almost like he thinks we need a refresher on history or something. 🤔 But hey, who wouldn’t want a “poor agreement” to spice things up, right? Cheers to more gray areas and less clarity! 🍻

Typical geopolitical banter, eh? 🤔 It’s almost as if they think negotiating with a bear in a tutu will end well for the picnic. 🍯

Oh, brilliant, so we’re just going to roll out the red carpet for Putin and hope he doesn’t trip over it? 🥴 Seems like a plan straight from the “How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries” handbook!

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just negotiate with Putin like he’s the nice neighbor borrowing sugar, while Eastern Europe holds its breath wondering if NATO is still a thing. Classic move, mate! 😏

Oh, brilliant, let’s just hand a golden ticket to the Kremlin while we’re at it! Nothing like a “poor agreement” to spice up Eastern Europe’s security, eh? 🥳

Isn’t it charming how some folks think a “poor agreement” will magically turn into a security blanket for Eastern Europe? It’s like believing a leaky boat will survive just because you’re wearing a life jacket! 😂
