Strasbourg – In her first media statement following the approval of the new European Commission, Marta Kos, the newly appointed European Commissioner for Enlargement, highlighted the necessity for North Macedonia to amend its Constitution. She stated that this change is essential for the European Union’s expectations, as reported by MIA’s special correspondent from Strasbourg.
“This is something we count on—nothing less, nothing more. I believe it is achievable, and once accomplished, it can significantly expedite the process,” Kos emphasized.
When asked whether guarantees could be provided to prevent future blockages, Kos acknowledged her limitations in answering that question. She addressed the ongoing issue with Bulgaria, stressing the importance of facilitating discussions.
“Engagement is crucial. We must converse as much as possible with both North Macedonia and Bulgaria. It’s essential to demonstrate that finding a resolution to this bilateral issue is within our control. By doing so and adhering to European values, we can ensure the best outcomes for the EU as well as for North Macedonia,” Kos stated.
She noted that the landscape of enlargement has evolved compared to five years ago. “The geopolitical context has shifted, and the dynamics surrounding enlargement are entirely different now. There are substantial opportunities in the coming years for several countries to advance toward EU membership, though I cannot specify which countries that might involve. Ultimately, it will be those that fulfill all necessary criteria,” Kos emphasized.
Regarding the possibility of Western Balkan countries joining the EU by 2030, she expressed optimism about her appointment’s potential impact on the region.
“I believe my appointment is a positive development for the Western Balkans. I intend to foster close collaboration with the countries ready for EU accession, engaging in extensive visits and efforts to facilitate their entry into the EU,” concluded Marta Kos, the new European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy.
