BRUSSELS – European Council President Antonio Košta announced that he will call for an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days to discuss the situation regarding Greenland. He reaffirmed Brussels’ commitment to international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty. “Given the significance of recent developments and the need for further coordination, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council shortly,” Košta stated in a post on social media platform X.
He noted that the EU stands united in its support for Denmark and Greenland. Following discussions about the tensions surrounding Greenland, Košta mentioned that EU member states recognize that maintaining peace and security in the Arctic is a shared transatlantic interest, particularly through NATO collaboration. He pointed out that member states believe imposing tariffs would jeopardize transatlantic relations and conflict with the EU-US trade agreement, while emphasizing the Union’s determination to protect itself from any form of coercion.
Košta highlighted the EU’s willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the United States on all matters of mutual concern. US President Donald Trump recently threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff starting February 1 on goods from the UK, Norway, and six EU nations involved in Arctic military exercises in Greenland, until an agreement is made regarding the US purchase of Greenland.
