Bratislava – Marcela Kosová, Chairwoman of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, stated that this year’s European Commission (EC) report on the rule of law in Slovakia was more objective compared to previous assessments. The Judicial Council acknowledged the report during its meeting on August 13, as reported by TASR.
“I have nothing prepared that we could criticize,” remarked Marcela Kosová. She expressed interest in the content of next year’s report, particularly regarding the dismissal of former District Court Bratislava III Chairman, Roman Fitt, in 2022 by former Minister of Justice and current National Council Member, Mária Kolíková (SaS).
Kolíková cited managerial failure as the reason for Fitt’s dismissal, linking it to his refusal to provide an investigative file with a classified attachment to the National Criminal Agency.
In its annual report released in early July, the European Commission noted that Slovakia has made insufficient progress in implementing last year’s recommendations. Slovakia has been given seven recommendations, including the need to ensure sufficient independence in the dismissal of Judicial Council members and to provide effective and independent investigations and prosecutions of high-level corruption cases.
