Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Kapermolenpark skate park in Hasselt reopened after renovation with new concrete and obstacles, praised by skater Gilles Lizin, with the official opening set for the KPM Cup on September 14, 2025.
As VRT News reported, the skate park in Kapermolenpark in Hasselt has reopened after a large-scale renovation. The surface has been completely replaced with new concrete, while fresh elements in steel, granite, and natural stone were added.
Officials mentioned that both beginners who want to learn their first moves and advanced skaters, BMX riders, and scooter riders can now test their limits in a modern setting. For Hasselt skater Gilles Lizin, a familiar face in the KPM Skate Cup, the reopening ends a long wait.
“We’re happy the renovation is finally finished, because we’ve been waiting a long time,”
says Lizin.
“Luckily, we can now enjoy it for another week during the summer holidays. It looks really great.”
When will Hasselt’s renovated Kapermolenpark skate park officially open?
The official opening of the renewed skate park in Kapermolenpark is planned for the KPM Cup, which will take place on Car-Free Sunday, September 14, 2025. In the meantime, local skater Gilles Lizin was already testing the new park on Monday morning, Aug 25, 2025.
He spoke positively about the changes, noting that the surface of the old park had become heavily worn and urgently needed replacement. Lizin also welcomed the addition of new equipment and observed that the layout now feels less open, with obstacles placed closer.
“By then, the bowl, the only remaining obstacle from the old park, will be sanded and repainted,”
explains Tine Jans (Vooruit), Alderman for Sports and Youth Culture.
“Additional greenery will also be planted in the fall to freshen up the skate park and integrate it more seamlessly into the rest of Kapermolenpark.”
The first visitors were not only locals but also youngsters from a skate camp in Leuven. Among them, Alfons and Stan expressed great enthusiasm for the new design. The redevelopment of Kapermolenpark is part of a wider plan by the city, with 2 more skate parks currently in progress.
A tender has been launched for the skate park in Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, while another project in Kermt is also moving forward. Both facilities are scheduled to open later this year, expanding Hasselt’s network of urban sports locations.
“It’s a big skate park, much bigger than the parks near us,”
they said in unison.
“There are lots of fun obstacles, and
