Eurotoday (Brussels) – Following a wave of destructive Russian attacks on Ukrainian towns and villages on Sunday night, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, strongly urged the international community to intensify pressure on Moscow.
Kallas condemned the latest missile strikes by Russia, which targeted civilian areas and resulted in numerous casualties, including children. The attacks occurred during the night of May 24–25 and represent one of the most severe aerial offensives by Russian forces since the beginning of the war.
Taking to the social media platform X, Kallas expressed her sorrow and called for immediate global action. “Last night’s attacks again show Russia bent on more suffering and the annihilation of Ukraine. Devastating to see children among innocent victims harmed and killed. My thoughts are with the families today,” she wrote. “We need the strongest international pressure on Russia to stop this war.”
Impact on Ukrainian Civilians
The Kremlin launched its most extensive drone and missile assault on Kyiv and its surrounding regions in recent months. Occurring just hours after a major prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia, the attacks underscored the conflict’s escalating intensity despite brief moments of cooperation.
At least 12 people, including children, were reported killed, and dozens more were wounded in the onslaught. The strikes came amid growing international pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to adhere to ceasefire recommendations. Nevertheless, Moscow has continued to escalate its attacks, signaling little willingness to consider a peaceful resolution.
Call for Stronger International Response
Just days prior to the attacks, during an informal Foreign Affairs Council on May 20, 2025, Kallas called for increased action from the United States and other global partners. She emphasized that Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire over two months ago, but Russia has ignored diplomatic overtures and intensified hostilities instead.
“They are playing games,” Kallas warned, adding that the only viable path forward is to escalate diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia until it agrees to negotiate seriously.
