Italy’s Meloni Stands by Musk and Trump in Rare Press Conference — 5 Key Highlights

Trump’s Actions Have a Purpose, Says Meloni

Giorgia Meloni, increasingly viewed as Europe’s potential future bridge to Donald Trump, defended the president-elect following his controversial musings about Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal. Responding to concerns about a potential U.S. invasion, Meloni dismissed the fears, asserting that Trump always acts with purpose.

“When Trump does something, it’s for a reason,” Meloni remarked, framing his statements as a strategic signal to global powers rather than an imminent threat. Reflecting on his time in office from 2017 to 2021, she praised Trump’s ability to engage in what she described as effective deterrence diplomacy.

Meloni recently paid Trump a visit at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, describing the reception she received as “beyond expectations.” She explained that her trip was aimed at cementing a strong bond with Trump, which she believes holds great potential. “It’s a relationship that promises to be very solid—perhaps even privileged,” she stated.

While Meloni has developed a positive working relationship with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden since taking office, she predicted that having two conservative leaders in power—her in Italy and Trump in the U.S.—could bring “added value for Italy and for Europe.”

Meloni also confirmed receiving an invitation to Trump’s inauguration and said she would gladly attend if her schedule allows.

Triangular Diplomacy Secures Journalist’s Release

On a separate note, Meloni celebrated the release of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, describing it as a proud and deeply emotional moment for her government. Sala, who had been detained in Iran since December, was freed on Wednesday. Meloni shared that informing Sala’s mother of her release was “the most emotional moment of the past two years.”

Sala’s detention in Iran followed Italy’s arrest of Mohammed Abedini, a suspected supplier of drone parts wanted by the United States. When asked whether Trump influenced Italy’s decision to facilitate Sala’s release by negotiating over Abedini’s arrest, Meloni clarified that the talks were conducted as part of a triangular negotiation between Italy, Iran, and the U.S. She stressed the importance of continuing discussions with Washington regarding Abedini’s case.

As Meloni navigates high-stakes diplomacy and strengthens ties with Trump, her role as a key figure on the European stage becomes ever more pronounced.

Right, so Meloni’s cozying up to Trump like he’s the last slice of pizza at a conference—because who wouldn’t want a sprinkle of chaos in their diplomatic lasagna? 🍕🤷‍♂️

Oh, splendid! Nothing screams “strategic alliance” quite like cozying up to a former reality TV star while playing diplomatic chess with Iran. 🎭 Who knew geopolitical relations could be so… *entertaining*? 😏

Oh, splendid! Nothing screams “strategic signals” quite like a cozy chat with the man who thinks Greenland is ripe for the picking—maybe next he’ll offer Italy a slice of pizza as a diplomatic snack! 🍕😏
