Initial Findings Reveal Cable Break Preceded Lisbon Funicular Crash

Investigators noted that the brakeman of one of the carriages activated the brakes, but they were not sufficient to avert the calamity.

Both carriages had moved only six meters after departing their stations on Wednesday, around 6 p.m., when the connecting cable broke, according to the report.

Sixteen people lost their lives in Wednesday’s crash, including 11 foreigners: five Portuguese, two South Koreans, one Swiss, three Brits, two Canadians, one Ukrainian, one American, and one French.

Lisbon is set to hold local elections next month, with current mayor Carlos Moedas, a former European Commissioner, aiming for a second term.

Just what Lisbon needed—another tragic spectacle to spice up the election campaign. Who knew broken cables could lead to such a thrilling ride? 🎢

Seems like the brakes were on holiday while the cable took a permanent vacation! Just another day in Lisbon, where even the funiculars can’t seem to get a grip. 😅🚠

Seems like the funicular was just a tad too ambitious for its own good—who knew a broken cable could turn a scenic ride into an impromptu rollercoaster? 🎢 But hey, at least it gives the mayor some dramatic headlines to work with before the elections, right? 🤷‍♂️

  4. Oh, brilliant, nothing like a broken cable to spice up your evening ride in Lisbon! Guess the mayor will have to pull a few more strings than just his campaign ones now, eh? 😏

Just what we needed, another tragic reminder that engineering and Lisbon’s charm don’t always mix—who knew a broken cable could lead to such a delightful evening? 😏 But hey, at least the mayor is focused on the important stuff like re-election!

  6. Just when you thought public transport couldn’t get any more thrilling, a cable break sends folks on a ride they’d rather not take. Perfect timing for the mayor’s campaign—nothing like a little disaster to distract from the usual election drivel, right? 😏🚋

Just another day in Lisbon, where the funicular rides can turn into a real-life rollercoaster, minus the safety checks, of course. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe the mayor should focus on more than just votes next month, eh?
