Illa Expresses Catalonia’s Aspiration for Full Re-engagement with the EU in Brussels

Brussels – On Wednesday, the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, emphasized Catalonia’s commitment to “deeply re-engage” in the European integration process during his meetings with high-ranking officials in Brussels. He also addressed the matter of obtaining official status for the Catalan language within European institutions.

During his visit, Illa met with Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and Vasco Alves Cordeiro, the President of the Committee of the Regions.

In remarks to the press, Illa conveyed a “clear message” that the Catalan government seeks to “thoroughly and constructively” participate in European construction. He stressed to Metsola the importance of making Catalonia’s voice heard and contributing to the strengthening of the European project. In relation to the use of Catalan in the European Parliament, he expressed appreciation for Metsola’s constructive and diligent approach to resolving this significant issue for Catalonia.

“This Government will do everything necessary to achieve this goal,” Illa stated.

In his meeting with Cordeiro, Illa expressed the Catalan government’s “strong commitment” to engage fully in the European Committee of the Regions, highlighting the critical role that local entities and regions play in the EU’s development.

He reiterated Catalonia’s desire to “regain voice and prominence” in the Committee of the Regions, adding that “a strong Europe means a strong Catalonia.” He emphasized that the Generalitat will actively work to address the challenges facing Europe and ensure that the interests of the autonomous community are strongly represented.

When discussing the official status of Catalan in the EU, Illa expressed his belief that Catalonia’s request would be examined “thoroughly, seriously, and rigorously,” and assured that Catalonia would contribute in any way possible.

Illa confirmed that he would speak in Catalan during today’s session of the European Committee of the Regions and noted that many European institutions already allow the use of the language. He highlighted the importance of also being able to do so in the European Parliament.

He left the meetings feeling “convinced” that a thorough and serious evaluation of this issue is underway, noting the establishment of a working group to address it.

“I have articulated the situation, which is vital for Catalonia, the government, and its citizens,” he said.

In a separate matter, Illa expressed his desire to meet with former president Carles Puigdemont, hoping to arrange a meeting soon in Catalonia. He conveyed his “utmost respect and personal consideration” for Puigdemont in his roles as a member of the Catalan Parliament, leader of JuntsxCat, and former president of the Generalitat.

Illa also reminded that his party has been involved in promoting the Amnesty Law currently in effect in Spain and expressed anticipation for its swift publication.

Joining Illa during his visit was Jaume Duch, the Minister of the European Union and External Action. (November 20)

Ah, the Illa Express — because what the EU really needs is another Catalan love letter, right? Who wouldn’t want to make Brussels a bit more like Barcelona, complete with tapas and endless debates about independence over a glass of wine? Let’s hope they packed some good Catalan humor for the bureaucratic ball, otherwise, it might just end up as another soggy croissant in the EU’s grand breakfast!

Ah, the Illa Express—the latest high-speed train of ambition whisking Catalonia straight to Brussels, where dreams of re-engagement with the EU are as common as sunburnt tourists in August. It seems the only thing moving faster than this train is the desire to secure a seat at the table, preferably while sipping on a nice café con leche and discussing how to outwit the rest of Europe. But let’s be honest, if only aspirations could buy a ticket, we’d all be first-class passengers by now!

  3. Ah, the Illa Express, a charming little train ride straight to the heart of Brussels, where Catalonia’s dreams of re-engagement with the EU can finally be realized—because nothing says “we love you” quite like a fast train and some regional pride. One can only hope that the EU is ready to hop on board this emotional express; after all, who wouldn’t want to take a scenic detour through the land of fine wines and even finer arguments? It’s almost as if Catalonia is saying, “Forget Brexit, we’re all about that re-engagement life!”

Ah, Salvador Illa in Brussels, charmingly reminding the EU that Catalonia is still here and just dying to join the club again—because who wouldn’t want another bureaucracy on their plate, eh?
