Iceland’s Parliament to Consider Withdrawing EU Bid After Failed Referendum

Frostadóttir emphasized that the referendum result will be honored, and no further EU accession negotiations will occur during the current government’s term. She noted that EU accessions might be a topic in the upcoming general elections.

“It’s crucial right now that we take stock; we make a decision on what we do with … the application,” she said. The prime minister did not specify when parliament would address the issue.

Iceland initiated EU membership talks in 2009, which ended in 2013, but the application was never formally withdrawn.

She also stated that the referendum’s outcome would not affect her position as prime minister, as it “was not a party political matter,” despite her support for resuming talks.

Eiríkur Bergmann, a politics professor at Bifröst University, described the vote as a “heavy blow” for the government.

“The coalition will emerge significantly weakened domestically, having staked considerable political capital on securing a mandate to reopen these negotiations,” he said. “However, the government will probably still survive the loss.”
