Gonzato: Addressing the Past Demands Tangible Actions from Albanian Institutions

On the International Day of Missing Persons, the scientific symposium titled “The Border of Hope and Death 1944-1991 – Shkodra Confronting the Past” took place at the “Luigj Gurakuqi” University in Shkodër, organized by the Authority of Files.

EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato attended the symposium, commemorating the thousands of Albanians who lost their lives seeking freedom across the border and those who vanished under the harsh communist regime.

Since 2017, the European Union has been assisting Albania in identifying individuals missing during the communist era. The EU has collaborated with ICMP, the Authority of Files, and civil society to enhance coordination and increase public awareness.

“This day serves as a reminder of the many lost lives, as well as the families still in search of truth and justice. For Albania, addressing the legacy of border killings and disappearances during the communist regime is essential for dignity, justice, and fostering trust between citizens and institutions,” Gonzato stated.

He emphasized the need for political will, an effective legal framework, and concrete actions from relevant Albanian institutions to uphold the rule of law, urging the Council of Ministers to establish a coordinating mechanism for the search and exhumation of those killed during the communist regime.

“Confronting the past is a collective responsibility, where everyone must play a part,” the EU ambassador remarked during his speech.

The symposium also featured a welcoming address by Elisa Spiropali, Chairwoman of the Assembly.

Participants included former political prisoners from the communist era, their families, researchers, local governance representatives, religious communities, and members of civil society. (August 29)

Talk about a real page-turner—nothing like a symposium on border killings to spice up the day! 🍷 But hey, who doesn’t love a good reminder that addressing the past is all fun and games, as long as someone else does the heavy lifting, right? 😅

Looks like Gonzato is handing out history lessons like they’re free samples at a market. Who knew confronting the past could be so… motivational? 😏

Isn’t it charming how we need a symposium to figure out that addressing the past might be a tad important? 🤔 Maybe next we can hold a conference on the importance of breathing, just to be safe! 😅

Seems like the EU’s idea of a “borderline” solution is just to hold a symposium while updating their PowerPoints. 🤷‍♂️ If only tangible actions could be magically conjured at such events, we’d have solved the whole shebang by now!

Looks like Gonzato’s giving a masterclass on how to turn a tragic past into a bureaucratic tango. Just what we need, more meetings to discuss what should have been sorted ages ago! 😏💼

  6. Oh great, another symposium to remind us that “addressing the past” is just a fancy way to say, “let’s keep talking while nothing actually changes.” 🤦‍♂️ Typical European charm, eh?

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed, a symposium to remind us that “political will” is the secret ingredient for progress. Maybe they should try adding a sprinkle of common sense next time. 😏

Looks like the EU is really pushing Albania to address its past—because, you know, ignoring a few decades of border killings is just so last season! 😏 Who needs a legal framework when you’ve got a symposium to solve all your problems, right?

  9. Blimey, sounds like a real knees-up for the ghosts of the past! Nothing like a good ol’ symposium to remind us that action is always ‘just around the corner’… right? 😏🇦🇱

Funny how it takes an EU ambassador to remind a nation that sorting out its past isn’t optional—maybe they should just add “historical cleanup” to the job description of our esteemed Council of Ministers. 🤔💼

  11. Seems like the EU’s got a real soft spot for digging up the past—who knew a symposium could double as a graveyard tour? 😏 Maybe next time they’ll throw in a history lesson with a side of coffee and pastries! 🍰
