Germany’s Merkel Criticizes EU for Not Talking to Russia

There is increasing pressure on Europe to designate a special envoy for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Both Moscow and Kyiv have indicated a willingness for such mediation, amidst Trump’s team’s focus on the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Merkel, Germany’s chancellor from 2005 to 2021, mentioned her proposal for a diplomatic framework between the EU and Russia at her last European Council meeting in October 2021, ending her tenure shortly before Russia’s full-scale war began. However, it didn’t materialize due to differing views within the bloc on dealing with Moscow.

“You have to keep working on it until you reach a common position,” Merkel noted regarding bloc disagreements. “Diplomacy has always been the other side of the coin, also during the Cold War.”

Merkel’s legacy has faced scrutiny, especially regarding Germany’s reliance on Russian gas during her leadership. Criticism has increased since Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine began four years ago.

Her negotiation experience with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has led to Merkel being considered as a potential EU peace envoy to resolve the conflict.

Merkel, however, stated her office hadn’t received an official request. She emphasized that only those in power make credible negotiators, sharing her experiences with Putin after Crimea’s annexation in 2014.

“We were only able to hold those [negotiations] with President Putin because we had political power, because we were heads of government,” Merkel said. “You need that power. And I, personally, would never have thought of asking a mediator to go to Minsk for me and talk to Putin … You have to take that into your own hands.”

The Minsk agreements, negotiated by Merkel and her French counterpart in 2014 and 2015 to stop fighting in eastern Ukraine, failed to bring a lasting ceasefire. Violations persisted for years until Russia’s total war began in 2022.

Seems like Merkel’s idea of diplomacy is as effective as a German train schedule—always late and full of unexpected stops. 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait to see how this special envoy gig turns out; there’s nothing like a good chat over a pint with your neighbor while they’re busy invading your backyard! 🍻

So, Merkel criticizes the EU for not chatting with Putin, huh? Guess she’s spicing up her retirement with a bit of diplomatic nostalgia – because who wouldn’t want to relive the thrill of Cold War-style negotiations? 😂

So Merkel’s back in the game, huh? Maybe she thinks if she waves her magic wand hard enough, the EU will finally stop playing hide and seek with diplomacy… 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Merkel’s idea of diplomacy is as effective as trying to fix a leaky roof with a colander. 🤷‍♂️ A bit late to the tea party, don’t you think? ☕️

Seems like Merkel’s trying to revive diplomacy like a bad 90s sitcom—everyone’s waiting for the punchline that never comes. 🤷‍♂️ Guess we’ll just keep tossing the peace talk around like a hot potato; let’s hope it doesn’t end up in the wrong oven! 🍽️

Oh, lovely! Merkel’s now a diplomat in retirement—who knew? Maybe next she’ll offer to bake cookies for peace talks, just to sweeten the deal 🍪.

Isn’t it charming how Merkel, once pulling the strings, now just wants to be a middleman in a game no one asked her to referee? 😏 Guess diplomacy is like a fine wine—takes ages to brew and still leaves a sour taste! 🍷

Looks like Merkel’s got her hands full; maybe she should just send Putin a nice text instead of waiting for the EU to grow a backbone. 🤷‍♂️ It’s a real diplomatic wonderland over here, innit?

Right, because what Europe really needs is more pow-wows with the Kremlin while juggling natural gas prices like a circus act. 🤹‍♂️ Who needs a solid plan when we’ve got “diplomacy” on speed dial, eh?

Oh great, just what we need—a former chancellor giving us a masterclass on diplomacy after a decade of cozying up to Putin. Maybe she’ll bring some vodka and we’ll all sit around singing “Kumbaya”! 🍻

Looks like Merkel’s got a knack for déjà vu – proposing peace talks while the rest of us are still waiting for that cold cup of coffee to brew 😏. Who knew diplomacy was just another round of musical chairs?

Seems like Merkel is suggesting we have a chat with Putin, as if a friendly cup of coffee is the answer to years of conflict. 😂 Good luck finding a common position when half the table can’t agree on the menu! 🍽️

Can’t believe the EU is still playing hide-and-seek with Russia while the rest of us are just trying to keep our gas bills down. Maybe they should send Merkel a postcard with an apology for not taking her advice—she might just be on to something! 😂🥴

Isn’t it charming how Merkel thinks her past power can magically fix a mess she helped brew? Guess diplomacy is just like a fine wine – gets better with age, but sometimes you just end up with vinegar. 🍷 #Cheers

Isn’t it charming how Merkel’s diplomatic brilliance is suddenly in vogue, just when the rest of us are busy figuring out how to turn off our gas stoves? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next they’ll ask her to negotiate peace over a cuppa in a Berlin cafe! ☕️
