French Agriculture Minister Visits Budapest and Vienna to Oppose Mercosur Agreement

Paris – On Friday, French Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard visited Budapest, where Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy reiterated the country’s opposition to the ongoing free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, as reported by AFP.

Genevard also plans to travel to Vienna in her efforts to build a coalition against the deal within the EU.

“The goal is to engage with countries likely to support our stance against this agreement,” she stated. “During my meeting with Minister Nagy and Peter Szijjarto, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we had an in-depth discussion.”

“We both recognize the detrimental impact this agreement could have on the agricultural sectors in our countries, as the anticipated influx of meat imports from Mercosur nations (including beef and poultry) threatens to destabilize our markets.”

In contrast, Berlin is supportive of the agreement and is pushing for a swift ratification process. Genevard is scheduled to meet with her German counterpart in Paris on Monday. (May 16, 2025)
