Brussels (Eurotoday) – In just 12 days, Brussels collected an impressive 424.72 tons of bulky household waste across seven city districts—a 16.48% increase compared to the previous year. City officials praised the initiative as a meaningful step toward reducing illegal dumping. Another large-scale collection is scheduled for the fall.
According to VRT News, the city’s sanitation department organized a major waste collection campaign from April 14 to April 26, 2025. The cleanup spanned all seven districts, from Neder-Over-Heembeek to Louiza, allowing residents to dispose of up to 2 cubic meters of bulky items free of charge using designated containers.
During the initiative, the city filled 188 containers with waste—up from 161 containers the previous spring—reflecting a growing participation rate among residents. The collected waste totaled 424.72 tons, compared to 364.74 tons last year.
Non-recyclable household waste saw a significant rise, with 103 containers filled this year compared to 87 in 2024—an 18% increase. While the amount of metal waste stayed consistent, wood waste saw a substantial jump of nearly 37%, with 41 containers collected in 2025 versus 30 the year before.
A city alderman hailed the spring cleanup as a successful measure against illegal dumping. The initiative’s goal, he explained, is to make it easier for residents to get rid of large, unwanted items—such as old mattresses, broken appliances, and worn-out furniture—without resorting to dumping them in public spaces.
Officials confirmed another city-wide bulky waste pickup is planned for autumn. These ongoing efforts are central to the city’s strategy to promote responsible waste disposal and maintain cleaner streets. By offering free and convenient collection services, the city hopes to shift public behavior and reduce instances of illegal dumping.
