Fico: European Commission Evaluates Infringement Action Against Slovakia Over Constitutional Amendment

Bratislava/Brussels – The European Commission (EC) is contemplating an infringement action against Slovakia regarding the amendment to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic. This was disclosed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) during a press conference in Poprad on Friday, where he received this information earlier that morning. The amendment pertains to a constitutional article asserting that in matters of values and ethics, national law should take precedence over European Union (EU) law, as reported by TASR.

“We welcome this conflict. I cannot fathom that an international organization should dictate how many genders exist or who can marry whom. This is solely a domestic issue, deeply tied to our national identity,” stated Robert Fico.

European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert expressed that he is unaware of any ongoing infringement proceedings against Slovakia relating to the constitutional amendment. He made this announcement during a press conference in Brussels on Friday. “We would not announce infringement proceedings outside the established process, so I cannot comment further,” the EC spokesperson said. He noted that the Commission has communicated its stance on the recent constitutional amendment to Slovak authorities and is currently engaged in discussions with them.

The Prime Minister affirmed his belief that the foundational treaties governing the EU permit member states to prioritize national law over EU regulations concerning national identity.

“I understand that our firm constitutional stance may cause concern among some member states. We believe it is essential to clearly outline in the constitution where our law takes precedence over EU law,” Fico remarked. He warned that failing to protect national identity and traditions could lead to the “international community consuming us,” rendering Slovakia insignificant.

“We will have the opportunity to clarify to both the Slovak public and the international community the intentions behind this significant constitutional provision,” the Prime Minister added.

The amendment to the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, effective November 1, asserts that Slovakia recognizes only the biologically determined genders of male and female. It also guarantees equality between genders in terms of remuneration for work performed, addresses child adoption, and outlines aspects of the educational process. This amendment aims to enhance Slovakia’s sovereignty in cultural and ethical matters. The parliament approved the amendment on September 26. (November 6)

“We believe that it should be clearly written in the constitution where our law will apply and where EU law will apply.” Robert Fico

  1. Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “progressive democracy” quite like a constitutional amendment that solidifies good old-fashioned values. I suppose next they’ll be amending it to declare that the sun rises in the east too. 😏

Just what we needed, another constitutional amendment to remind us how uniquely Slovak we are, as if the EU was trying to take away our right to decide how many genders fit into a Bratislava pub. Cheers to Fico for keeping it local, mate! 🍻

Seems like Fico’s got a real handle on how to keep Slovakia’s identity intact, bless his heart. I mean, who needs EU regulations when you can just amend your way to cultural sovereignty, right? 😂

Looks like Fico’s got his marching orders from the EU—who knew sovereignty could be so trendy? 🤔 Just wait till they start asking us how to brew coffee! ☕️

Just what we needed, another constitutional amendment to remind the EU that “sovereignty” is more than just a buzzword—cheers to being the poster child for selective compliance! 🙄💼

  6. Seems like Fico’s got the whole “national identity” thing down to a fine art — who knew prioritizing our own laws over EU regulations was the new black? 🇸🇰💅 Next, he’ll be saying we should decide how many flavors of ice cream are acceptable too! 🍦

Just what we need, more constitutional amendments to remind us that Slovakia is the self-appointed guardian of gender definitions—next, they’ll be insisting on a national holiday for it. 🎉 Talk about putting the “fun” in fundamental rights! 😏

Just what we needed, another splendid round of EU-Slovakia tango! Who needs unity when you can have a constitutional crisis instead? 🕺💼

Seems like Fico’s got a real knack for picking fights with the EU, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Quite the strategy, prioritizing national identity over common sense—who needs unity when you can have a constitutional crisis instead? 😏

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “we’re living in the 21st century” like a constitutional amendment that puts national identity over basic human rights. 🤦‍♂️ Who needs progress when you’ve got tradition, right?

Never thought I’d see the day when Slovakia wants to play hide-and-seek with EU laws over gender definitions. Who knew constitutional amendments could be so… avant-garde? 😂

  12. Oh, brilliant move, Fico! Nothing screams national identity quite like a constitutional amendment that prioritizes your interpretation of gender over, you know, actual science. 🤷‍♂️ #ClassicSlovakia

Nothing like a little constitutional tussle to spice up the EU meetings, eh? Who needs European unity when you can prioritize your own ‘national identity’ over pesky things like, you know, human rights? 😂

Looks like Fico’s ready to turn Slovakia into the EU’s version of a resolute teenager—“You can’t tell me who I am!” 😂 Just what we need, more national identity over EU standards; perhaps next, he’ll suggest Slovakia opt out of the metric system too!

Nothing like a good ol’ constitutional amendment to remind Brussels who’s boss, eh? Must be nice to prioritize national identity while the rest of us are just trying to figure out what time it is 😏.

Looks like Fico’s ready to duel the EU over who gets to define “identity” – maybe he should just stick to brewing coffee instead of stirring the pot. ☕️😏

Oh, brilliant move, Fico! Nothing says “let’s embrace modern values” quite like a constitutional amendment written with a quill from the 18th century. 🇸🇰✌️

Seems like Fico’s trying to rewrite the Constitution and the EU rulebook all in one go—what a multitasker! 😏 Next, he’ll be claiming that the moon is also a Slovak territory if it means keeping the ‘latte-sipping Brussels bureaucrats’ at bay!
