Mette Frederiksen and the Nordics
Denmark’s prime minister maintained a low profile in what was seen as a German-driven conflict, yet Frederiksen, whose nation currently presides over the Council of the EU and the broader Nordic bloc, subtly supported the prevailing “only game in town” perspective.
A longstanding divide reemerged: frugals versus joint debt, this time through a clash over utilizing frozen Russian assets.
Ultimately, one side dominated. Leaders decided to proceed with joint borrowing to address Ukraine’s financial requirements for the next two years, dismissing alternative proposals that had occupied discussions for weeks.
Hungary, Slovakia, and Czechia
The trio achieved a temporary — mostly financial — success by evading direct commitments to finance Ukraine.
However, this triumph might become costly. Funds will still be dispatched — and such a move risks their further estrangement within the EU. Will there be consequences from other EU members? Only time will tell.
