EU’s Make-or-Break Ukraine Summit: Winners and Losers

Mette Frederiksen and the Nordics

Denmark’s prime minister maintained a low profile in what was seen as a German-driven conflict, yet Frederiksen, whose nation currently presides over the Council of the EU and the broader Nordic bloc, subtly supported the prevailing “only game in town” perspective.

A longstanding divide reemerged: frugals versus joint debt, this time through a clash over utilizing frozen Russian assets.

Ultimately, one side dominated. Leaders decided to proceed with joint borrowing to address Ukraine’s financial requirements for the next two years, dismissing alternative proposals that had occupied discussions for weeks.

Hungary, Slovakia, and Czechia

The trio achieved a temporary — mostly financial — success by evading direct commitments to finance Ukraine.

However, this triumph might become costly. Funds will still be dispatched — and such a move risks their further estrangement within the EU. Will there be consequences from other EU members? Only time will tell.

Oh, look at the Nordics playing coy while the real game is everywhere but on their icy shores. 😂 Meanwhile, Hungary and the gang are just mastering the art of “financial limbo”—how low can you go without actually committing? 🤑

Looks like the Nordics showed up to the party with a half-eaten sandwich while the Germans brought a buffet. 🍽️ Who knew dodging commitments could be the new Olympic sport? 🥇

Oh, splendid! The Nordics played it cool while everyone else was wrestling in the financial mud. Nothing like a game of “pass the buck” to showcase your leadership skills, am I right? 😂💸

Oh joy, nothing like a good ol’ EU summit to sort out what’s really important: who gets to play nice with frozen Russian cash while the rest of us are left to figure out how to pay for our holiday pints. 🍻 Good luck with that, lads!

  6. Isn’t it charming how the frugals found a way to dodge the bill while pretending to be part of the fancy dinner party? 🙄 Just wait till the other guests send them the actual check!

Looks like the Nordics are playing the long game while Hungary and the gang are just trying to dodge the bill; classic EU strategy, innit? 😂 ‘Joint borrowing’ sounds like a fancy way to say “let’s all pay for Ukraine’s party but not get caught in the hangover!” 🍻

Right, so we’ve got a summit where the Nordics play hide and seek while the frugals dodge the bill – classic EU diplomacy, isn’t it? 🍺 Who knew keeping your wallet shut could lead to such a spirited tug-of-war? 🥳

  9. Great to see our leaders in action—nothing screams unity like a financial tug-of-war over frozen Russian cash. Bravo to the Nordics for playing the best game of hide and seek with commitments! 😏💸

Oh, brilliant move! Nothing like a bit of financial wizardry to keep the frugals happy while the rest of us play Monopoly with frozen Russian assets. 😏💸

  11. Oh, brilliant! Who knew avoiding commitment could be the new EU Olympic sport? 🥇 Let’s just hope those ‘temporary successes’ don’t come with a hefty bill down the line – or do we just call that a Tuesday? 😏

Looks like the frugals are flexing their muscles again, but we all know that avoiding responsibility is a classic European sport. 😂 Who needs unity when you’ve got a nice little game of financial dodgeball going on?
