European Parliament Members Discover Cross-Border European Capital of Culture in Nova Gorica and Gorica

Nova Gorica – A delegation of three members from the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education visited Nova Gorica and Gorizia, which this year serve as the first cross-border European Capital of Culture (ECoC). The head of the delegation, Hannes Heide, stated at the conclusion of the visit that ECoC Nova Gorica-Gorizia 2025 exemplifies how culture and collaboration can cross borders and transform a shared history into collective advancement.

During the two-day visit, the Members of the European Parliament, including Heide, Manuela Ripa, and Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, along with Slovenian MEP Matjaž Nemec, engaged with experts and local representatives from various fields such as art, literature, cinematography, music, dance, cuisine, science, and theater to understand how the two historically divided cities are uniting and providing a model for Europe.

“I have visited many European Capitals of Culture, but ECoC Nova Gorica-Gorizia 2025 stands out as the most remarkable and impressive to date. Many individuals are deeply committed to this initiative,” Heide remarked at the end of the visit. He emphasized that both Gorizias illustrate that the values that bring us together run much deeper than our divisions.

Nemec noted that GO! 2025 in Brussels is a success story. “It might not be as evident in the local community, but the European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica-Gorizia represents an extraordinarily successful project with a truly exceptional message,” he added.

The MEPs also engaged with political figures from both nations, including the State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Culture, Marko Rusjan.

According to the ministry, Rusjan portrayed the European Capital of Culture project as more than a cultural event; it has evolved into a model of collaboration between two border cities and a symbol of overcoming divisions. He asserted that the ECoC is not only the largest cultural event in the region’s history but also evidence that culture connects and facilitates cooperation in other sectors.

The ECoC, featuring over 400 events, will culminate with a closing event in Nova Gorica from December 1 to 5. (October 29)

Seems like Nova Gorica and Gorizia finally found a way to throw a party together—who knew culture could be a diplomatic tool? 🍷🤷‍♂️ Just what Europe needs: more cities trying to prove they can play nice when they’re not busy arguing over borders!

  2. Oh, how charming! Two cities finally deciding that sharing a border means more than just a fancy map. Who knew culture could be so… cross-border? 😂

Seems like the Eurocrats have finally found a way to put the “fun” in dysfunctional relations, eh? 🎭 Just what we needed: two cities trying to hug it out while the rest of us are stuck in traffic! 😂

Sure, because nothing says “we’re united” quite like a fancy title and a bunch of MEPs sipping espresso while discussing art in a place that used to be a battlefield. 🙄🍷

Oh great, another “cultural collaboration” between two towns that used to be divided by a border—what a groundbreaking revelation. I suppose next they’ll be handing out medals for simply sharing a coffee ☕️ across the street.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “cultural unity” quite like a bunch of MEPs trotting around two border towns, high-fiving over their shared history while the locals are probably just trying to find a decent cup of coffee. 🍵🤷‍♂️

So, the bigwigs from Brussels are raving about a “remarkable” cross-border culture fest in Nova Gorica – how original! 🌍 Can’t wait for the next “extraordinary” initiative to unite cities that are literally next door to each other. 🙄

  10. So, the MEPs found a ‘capital of culture’ in a place that’s literally divided by a border? How charming! Must be nice to see all that culture bridging gaps while they sip their espressos and discuss which side of the street has better gelato. 🍦🇸🇮

Oh, the wonders of cross-border collaboration! Who knew two divided cities could unite over art and dance while the rest of us are still figuring out how to share a taxi? 🤷‍♂️

  12. Oh, a cross-border cultural extravaganza in the Gorizias? 😅 Who knew that two cities with a shared history could actually join forces and not just trade barbs over the border? Typical, isn’t it?

Imagine a cultural fiesta so spectacular that even the borders are celebrating! 🎉 Who knew two cities could put aside their differences for a bit of art and food? Sounds like a real page-turner in the history books! 😏

Just what we needed, a cross-border cultural lovefest in two towns that can’t seem to agree on a name. Can’t wait to see how many more bureaucrats can fit into a celebration of togetherness – should be a real treat! 😏🥳

  15. Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “cross-border collaboration” quite like a fancy title and a two-day jaunt around Nova Gorica—I’m sure the culture will just magically flow across the border now. 🙄✨

Oh, brilliant move calling a couple of divided cities the “European Capital of Culture”! Just what we need—more bureaucratic jargon to unite us while we sip our espresso and argue about the best gelato! 🍦😏

So, we’ve got two cities playing nice and pretending culture can erase history—brilliant! 😏 If only it were as easy to unite the coffee and wine drinkers across the street! 🍷☕️

  20. Oh, brilliant! Who knew two cities could join forces over culture instead of just bickering at the border? I mean, next they’ll be sharing a cup of coffee and planning the next Eurovision together! 😂☕️
