European Parliament calls for expedited import ban on Russian gas

The European Parliament has proposed a complete ban on oil imports by New Year’s Day. A year later, by January 1, 2027, gas imports are also expected to be phased out. These proposed timelines advocate for a quicker transition than what the Commission suggested in June. Additionally, the Commission is seeking an early ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports starting January 2027 as part of new sanctions against Russia.

The Members of the European Parliament have also supported a prohibition on services to Russian companies operating in LNG terminals beginning January 2027. This could impact Belgium’s gas company Fluxys, which has a long-term contract with Russia’s Yamal at the Zeebrugge LNG terminal.

In recent weeks, Belgian diplomats have been working to remove the relevant provisions. Their aim is not to oppose the phase-out of Russian LNG, but to avoid potential legal challenges at the European Court of Justice. Belgium advocates for alternative solutions to ensure legal certainty, a stance that appears to be shared by other member states. Energy ministers from the 27 nations will discuss the draft regulation on Monday in Luxembourg, after which an agreement will need to be reached between the member states and the European Parliament.

  1. Oh, lovely, nothing says “let’s win the energy game” like banning gas imports from the very country we can’t seem to stop buying it from. Maybe next they’ll propose a ban on breathing Russian air too! 😂

Right, because nothing screams “energy independence” like planning to stop buying gas from your biggest supplier while still relying on them for, oh I don’t know, basic survival? 🤷‍♂️ #BrilliantStrategy

Seems like the EU is in a race to see who can say “no thanks” to Russian gas the quickest. Honestly, did they just discover that gas is not a friendly name for a nice Italian dinner? 🍝💨

Looks like the EU’s trying to kick the Russian gas habit faster than a caffeine junkie on New Year’s Day—good luck with that! At this rate, by 2027 we’ll all be toasting with renewable energy instead of vodka. 🍻

Looks like the European Parliament is finally serious about kicking the gas habit—better late than never, eh? Meanwhile, I hope the Belgians have a good plan for all that gas they won’t be getting; maybe they can just ask their waffles to power the country instead! 😏✨

Oh, brilliant move by the Parliament! Because who needs energy security when you can just play a game of “let’s see how cold we can get this winter”? 🥶💡
