Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a close ally of Donald Trump, urged Europeans to prevent divisions with Washington and announced that Rome would soon call for an EU-U.S. summit to restore diplomatic dialogue.
“We need an urgent summit between the United States, European nations, and allies to have an open discussion about how we plan to address today’s major challenges—starting with Ukraine, which we have collectively defended in recent years,” Meloni stated.
Meanwhile, several European leaders are set to meet separately in London on Sunday at the invitation of U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expected to attend. A spokesperson for Starmer confirmed that he spoke with both Zelensky and Trump on Friday night.
Starmer “remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine,” the spokesperson said.
In contrast, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed support for Trump, praising him for his stance on peace.
“Strong men make peace, weak men make war,” Orbán posted on X.
