Eupen Street Arts Festival Relocated Due to High Fens Fire

Eupen, Belgium, 19 August (Eurotoday) The Eupen street arts festival will bring performances into the Belgian city after a major wildfire in the High Fens disrupted plans in the surrounding region, as firefighters continue operations near the Belgian-German border.

The change means visitors will be directed towards Eupen rather than areas affected by the fire, keeping cultural activities away from the emergency response while allowing the programme to continue.

Street arts programme moves into Eupen

Eupen is preparing for a weekend of street theatre, circus and live music as HAASte Töne?! returns for its 32nd edition.

The festival is scheduled from 21 to 23 August and is organised by Chudoscnik Sunergia. According to East Belgium’s official tourism service, performances will be centred around Temsepark and Eupen’s lower town.

The programme combines street theatre with circus, aerial acrobatics, mime and music, with both international and regional performers expected to take part.

The WeltmusikFest is scheduled to open the weekend on Friday before street theatre and circus performances continue through Saturday and Sunday.

High Fens wildfire disrupts the region

The festival arrangements come as emergency crews deal with a significant wildfire in the High Fens, the protected natural landscape immediately outside Eupen.

The blaze has affected thousands of hectares of vegetation and prompted a large firefighting operation on both sides of the Belgian-German border.

Residents in Monschau-Kalterherberg, in neighbouring Germany, were evacuated as a precaution during the emergency, while smoke from the fire has also been detected in communities farther from the burning area.

Authorities in the Aachen region have been monitoring air quality. German officials said measurements had remained below levels considered dangerous to health, although people in areas affected by smoke were advised to take precautions.

Officials warn against speculation over fire cause

The cause of the wildfire has not been officially established.

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul has urged people not to speculate about how the blaze started while investigators establish the facts.

Emergency services remain focused on bringing the fire under control and protecting nearby communities, with the terrain creating additional challenges for crews.

The High Fens contains extensive peatland, heath and woodland, and some sections can be difficult for firefighting vehicles and personnel to reach.

Eupen prepares for festival visitors

The Eupen street arts festival is expected to transform parts of the city’s lower town into temporary performance spaces.

Eupen already has an established role as a cultural centre for Belgium’s German-speaking Community. Its position close to Germany and the Netherlands also means major events can

Seems like Eupen is getting a little too close to nature’s bonfire, but hey, let’s just relocate the circus to the streets—because who wouldn’t want to juggle flaming torches while dodging smoke? 🎪🔥
