Hipper made the remarks in response to a query from POLITICO, which earlier this week exposed leaked documents showing that the pro-Kremlin leadership of the unrecognized state in Tiraspol had rejected Moldovan offers to supply gas from European markets and had also turned down offers of humanitarian aid.
“We urge Tiraspol to collaborate with Chișinău to find solutions that prioritize the well-being of the local population,” Hipper stated.
During a closed-door briefing with journalists and top officials on Monday, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean accused Moscow of deliberately creating the crisis. “Russia is orchestrating this security crisis by weaponizing energy resources to destabilize the region,” Recean said.
“They cut off gas supplies to the region they effectively control, where they have also deployed military troops illegally, preventing others from providing assistance,” Recean added.
Transnistria has functioned as a de facto autonomous region since the 1990s, following a war with Moldova after the breakup of the Soviet Union. The region is home to over a thousand Russian troops who remain stationed there.
