EU to impose new sanctions on Tehran, according to von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced today that the EU plans to strengthen existing sanctions and implement new ones against Tehran due to the “brutal repression” of anti-government protests in Iran.

Demonstrating Europe’s unwavering support for the protesters who are “risking their lives” in pursuit of “freedom for themselves and future generations,” von der Leyen noted that “the EU has already imposed extensive sanctions against Iran.” She stated on the X platform: “we are proposing a ban on additional exports of critical technologies for drones and missiles.”

Furthermore, Ursula von der Leyen mentioned that alongside Kaja Kallas, head of European diplomacy, “we are also preparing new sanctions in response to the ongoing and violent repression of protesters by the regime.” (20/1/26)
