AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership formed in 2021 by Australia, the UK, and the US to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific with nuclear-powered submarines, known as “Pillar One.” The countries are also developing advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and cyber capabilities, called “Pillar Two.” Australia will acquire nuclear submarines from the US, develop a new AUKUS-class submarine, and host US and UK submarines. In mid-2025, the UK and Australia reassured the US of their AUKUS commitment after the Pentagon reviewed the pact. Concerns eased when US President Donald Trump reaffirmed support in October. “The US, after our review, remains committed to AUKUS and aims to enhance our submarine presence in the Pacific,” said Hegseth. “This is real capability reaching the warfighter next year,” said Australian Deputy PM Richard Marles. UK Minister of Defence John Healey stated, “Now, under our three governments, we’re full steam ahead on AUKUS.”
