The Commission’s multibillion-euro penalty is lower than the €4.34 billion fine imposed on Google by the EU in 2018 for abuse of dominance involving Android mobile devices, yet it surpasses the €2.42 billion penalty for favoring its own comparison-shopping service in 2017.
The Commission’s ruling coincides with an ongoing case in U.S. courts that is soon to go to trial.
In April, a U.S. federal judge ruled that Google had illegally maintained a monopoly in display search advertising, and a trial is set for September 22.
The U.S. government is seeking the divestment of Google’s assets in this case.
Google’s Global Head of Regulatory Affairs, Lee-Anne Mulholland, stated that the company will challenge the Commission’s decision.
“It imposes an unjustified fine and requires changes that will harm thousands of European businesses by making it more difficult for them to generate revenue,” Mulholland said.
